FAQs
Q. What is Menopause?
A. Menopause is the end of menstruation, typically occurring between the ages of 42-56. A woman can say she has entered menopause when she has not had her period for a full year. Menopause is also typically referred to as a few years prior to and after the onset of menopause.

Q. What are menopause signs and symptoms?
A. Menopause symptoms vary between women some having no or few symptoms and others having moderate to severe symptoms. Symptoms include weight gain, hot flashes, insomnia, night sweats, vaginal dryness, fatigue, itchy skin, mood swings, and urinary tract infections. The onset of symptoms can occur before menopause starts, known as perimenopause, and will continue until the woman has finished menopause.

Q. Does Menopause cause bone loss?
A. The female sex hormone estrogen plays an important role when it comes to bone health. Menopause results in a drop in this hormone.  On average, women lose 10% of bone mass during their first 5 years of menopause. This is why it is so important for women to eat a diet rich in calcium, take a calcium and vitamin d supplement, and exercise regularly.

Q. What is Premature menopause?
A. In the US the average age for the onset of menopause is 51 years old. However, some women get menopause before the age of 40 due to genetics, illness, or medical procedures. The early onset of menopause before the age of 40 is known as premature menopause.

Q. What is Postmenopause?
A. A woman is considered to be in postmenopause if she hasn’t had her period for a year or if a woman has had surgery and has had her ovaries removed.

Embracing Menopause
  • There is a light at the end of the tunnel as you start realizing the many benefits that come with being post menopausal. Women in their fifties are at a great time in their lives: they aren't in their twenties trying to find a job and career, or in their thirties looking for a husband or starting a family. At this stage in your life your children will most likely be older and out of the house. You will be able to use this time do all those things you were never able to do before, like take a class or go back to school, start a new hobby like painting, or stop putting off traveling, pack your bags, and head off to Europe or Asia!
Menopause myths
  • Loss of libido

    • Sexual researchers Masters and Johnson found that libido is not linked to estrogen levels, and therefore, menopausal women do not suddenly lose interest in sex. Women who are post menopausal have a drop in estrogen levels which may effect vaginal lubrication (this can be remedied with over the counter lubricants or lubricants prescribed by your doctor). Vaginal lubrication and desire are two completely different things, and women should understand that their sex life is up to them. It takes work to maintain intimacy. Don't be surprised if your interest in sex is the same during menopause as before menopause.

  • Weight Gain

    • Although many women tend to gain weight during postmenopause, this isn't necessarily caused by menopause. As women get older their natural metabolism tends to slow down. Most postmenopausal women can maintain their weight at a reduced calorie intake of about 1500 to 1600 calories. Eating more may lead to weight gain. To offset this, women may try eating 5-6 small meals throughout the day to keep their metabolism high and start an exercise routine. An exercise routine not only helps to manage weight but can also help to manage bone loss.

  • Emotional

    • Not all emotional issues pre-menopause will carry over into menopause. There are many things that can influence the emotional problems you may have during menopause including: personal health, health of female relatives, dietary habits, tobacco use, alcohol use, self esteem, and culture.

  • All women suffer from menopausal symptoms

    • Not all women suffer from menopausal symptoms. Studies show that about 15% of women experience no symptoms at all. Although those seem like small odds, you must take severity into account. The other 85% can range from very few symptoms, to moderate, to severe.

  • Menopause only lasts a few years

    • Many think menopause only lasts a few years. However, on average, menopause lasts between six and thirteen years.

  • Women can cure themselves with ERT or HRT

    • Women, menopause is not a disease, so it needs no cure. Hormone levels for each woman are very different and can constantly change, requiring a constant change in hormone therapy. Some women need different types of hormones, such as estrogen versus testosterone. Lastly, some women find hormone replacement therapy to be completely ineffective.
